Chapter 348 Don't Block My Way
Is there anything you want to know from Nick Fury?
Joey and Kang, two complete outsiders, exchanged a glance, then turned away and shook their heads.
They really didn't have much to ask Nick Fury.
WTF!
Nick Fury was furious upon receiving this response: "You son of a bitch, you bastard, you bastard! Are you looking for trouble?!"
Why would Superman kidnap his own faked death?
Just for fun?!
"First," Joey felt it necessary to define his position, "I didn't kidnap you."
Secondly, although he had many worries, Joey wasn't driven crazy by the pressure to seek entertainment:
"This is protection. There's no safer place than a SHIELD hospital that's been infiltrated or any other secret safe house."
Fury looked around at his surroundings and immediately understood the purpose of this place:
"A secret base, huh? Aren't you afraid I'll use this information against you later? Sooner or later I'll send an elite agent to steal all your classified data!"
"Whatever you want."
Fury's verbal threats had no effect on Joey; the real secrets of this secret base couldn't be stolen.
Moreover, if you look closely at the "classified information" Fury mentioned, most of it was stolen from S.H.I.E.L.D. by Iron Man and Batman using backdoors.
If Fury wants to move it back, Joey will definitely have no objection.
"You guys are ruthless!"
Fury, whose head was buzzing from being shot by three lethal bullets and then shocked by thousands of volts, was still able to keep his composure when he heard that the information about the secret base was stolen from the S.H.I.E.L.D. database.
This tolerance flared up completely when Joey told him that the secret society had known about Hydra all along:
"You bunch of idiots, why didn't you tell me about this?!"
Joey's casual remark shut down Fury's accusations—
"If I, or Tony, told you, would you believe me?"
Nick Fury was speechless.
Of course he wouldn't believe it.
A Superman of unknown origin is definitely not a reliable source, and as for Tony Stark? That little bastard is the least trustworthy one!
"If only Tony were half as composed as his father—"
Upon hearing Fury's criticism of Tony, Joey immediately retorted, "Then who knows, he might just make the same mistake as his father."
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s "Paperclip" program, which began during Howard Stark's era, ignored differences in stance and accepted Hydra's personnel and legacy indiscriminately. This did allow S.H.I.E.L.D.'s power to expand rapidly, but it also brought about the bitter consequences we see today.
It's fair to say that Tony's father deserves at least half the credit for Fury taking three bullets.
The remaining 9.5 points were entirely Fury's own problem.
"snort!"
Black Lu Dan, whose lifeline had been hit by another sentence, was completely speechless.
"Just stay here for now."
Joey, while placing Fury in the secret base, didn't forget to remind him of some survival tips:
"Don't wander around aimlessly. If you see one or two people locked up, don't get curious. They could kill you with just one look."
"If you see a purple female ghost that looks like a star-devourer gnawing on rocks or furniture, stay far away from her, or you might get sucked into some twisted void."
"If you see a crazy woman with white hair and a badge similar to mine, don't pay her any attention. She might punch you into a bloody mess."
"If you see some scary-looking, bat-like shadows wandering around, don't be afraid, they're friendly."
"Stop, stop!" Fury was almost laughing in exasperation.
"Didn't you say this was a safe house? Where the hell is it safe now?"
Is Superman playing some kind of weird rule game with him here?
Even S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most dangerous containment centers don't have this many rules!
"I don't have time to mess around with you guys! I need to go clean up this mess!"
After faking his death to escape, Fury wasn't without a place to go. Even a cunning rabbit has three burrows, let alone a seasoned old fox like him.
"It's best not to." Joey reached out to stop the other person.
"Don't forget you're dead now." You never foresaw Hydra's attack from the beginning, which made the split within S.H.I.E.L.D. a fait accompli.
"So you still had an ulterior motive." Nick Fury understood; Superman hadn't had good intentions from the start.
"You want S.H.I.E.L.D."
"No, I wasn't thinking about S.H.I.E.L.D."
This is no exaggeration. Joey originally came back to organize everyone, and he didn't expect that the internal conflict within S.H.I.E.L.D. would suddenly spill over at this time.
"But the situation is very serious now, and we need to unite all forces that can be united, even S.H.I.E.L.D."
Fortunately, he had already figured out how S.H.I.E.L.D. should handle the situation after the split:
"After we deal with Hydra's counterattack, Coulson will step in to consolidate the remaining forces of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Wow, compared to someone as old as me, you prefer Coulson?"
Fury was fairly certain that Superman really wanted S.H.I.E.L.D., so he just made a final confirmation: "Can you explain where Coulson's advantages lie compared to me?"
"Get to you, you suspicious old stubborn man, Coulson needs to communicate better."
What I'm getting at is—
Fury simply rephrased Superman's words in his own language: "Coulson is easier to fool than I am."
"Is Coulson kinder than you?"
"More soft-hearted than me!"
Are you more receptive to other people's opinions?
"Even easier to manipulate than me!"
"Is he more adaptable in his dealings with people?"
"His stance is completely wavering!"

In conclusion, Fury only realized one thing: "You don't just want S.H.I.E.L.D., you want an S.H.I.E.L.D. that you completely control!"
Faced with such accusations, Joey simply smiled and did not defend himself.
Fury is a really cunning and ruthless guy, and he completely underestimated Coulson. Time will prove Fury wrong.
Phil Coulson's previous refusal of Joey's suggestion to directly read minds of S.H.I.E.L.D. members proves that he is definitely not some puppet to be manipulated.
Coulson's mindset and overall perspective are more than enough to shoulder the heavy responsibility of the future new S.H.I.E.L.D., and when it comes to matters of principle, he is unlikely to be influenced by anyone, not even Superman or anyone else.
"But you at least have to tell me what kind of crisis it is? And how am I supposed to know if what you're saying is true?" Fury's words were loaded with meaning:
"The last person to say 'We are facing a major crisis' and begin consolidating power was an Austrian painter, before that the Duke of the Protector, and then Georgy Octavian and Palpatine—."
"What we're about to face is far worse than that," Joey suggested to Nick Fury.
"Tell me, Fury, if your universe and another universe were about to collide and destroy each other, and destroying the other universe's Earth could temporarily save your universe, would you do it?"
"I will." If such a thing were to happen, any hesitation from Fury, even for a second, would be a disrespect to his own responsibilities.
If it were a younger Fury, he might have thought about being a good person, communicating well with the other party, and trying to find a win-win solution.
But now, Fury will only use the lowest-risk solution approach:
"We must destroy them, and we must strike first, giving them no chance to react. We absolutely cannot gamble on whether they are benevolent, because they might very well share our sentiments."
In such a life-or-death situation, both sides will enter an endless cycle of suspicion, forming a chain of distrust. Neither side can risk their life and fortune to gamble that the other will suddenly become kind.
Having figured this out, Fury finally understood why Superman, who had always been indifferent to power, would so actively intervene in worldly affairs:
"So the crisis you're talking about isn't a hypothetical scenario, right?"
Fury understood why Superman hadn't chosen him to continue controlling S.H.I.E.L.D.: "Don't tell me you're suddenly having a meltdown—"
"That's right, that's what I think."
Therefore, Joey must find a way to gather all available resources in order to find a way to allow both universes to survive at the same time.
"I'm trying to save everyone, so..."
In the dimly lit underground cave, Fury wondered if it was just his imagination, but he felt that Superman's dark eyes were faintly glowing red.
"Get out of my way, Fury."
"In short, that's the situation. How things will actually turn out depends on the circumstances."
After explaining, Joey clapped his hands and adjourned the meeting, thoughtfully pointing towards the exit of the secret base:
"If you agree, stay here; if you disagree, go wherever you want."
The fierce look he just displayed seemed to be just Nick Fury's own imagination.
Nick Fury pondered for a long time before asking Joey only one last question:
"Can you get pizza delivery here? And it has to be the free kind."
