Chapter 47 An Unexpected Person
Chapter 47 An Unexpected Person
Tobias Gibson's anger did not subside over time; instead, it grew stronger.
The thought of the dilapidated streets, and the fact that there were more than one dilapidated street, made the police department's logistics chief, Gibson, furious.
At this moment, the chubby Tobias Gibson was like a high-pressure boiler, ready to explode at any moment in front of the Bureau of Anomalies.
Fortunately, with a large number of police officers blocking off the street and surrounding the Vanessa Theatre, Chief Gibson, who was on the verge of exploding, was moving away from the point of explosion.
"Chief, we didn't find Mike Montagu in the theater."
At this moment, a detective from the police station came to Gibson and briefed him on the officers' search of the theater.
"Chief, there's one more place we haven't searched," the detective continued. "There's an underground space beneath the theater, and the entrance is always sealed off—"
Before the police detective could finish speaking, a sharp, piercing police whistle blared.
Immediately afterwards, a cacophony of footsteps echoed through the night streets as heavily armed police officers rushed toward the sound of sirens.
Tobias Gibson also rushed to the scene. The people who attacked Mike were dangerous Beyonders. The police officers had no problem dealing with criminals, but dealing with Beyonders was a bit of a challenge.
"It's nice to see you again, Mr. Gibson."
The person the police officers surrounded was none other than Anastasia.
Anastasia, standing in the crowd, raised her hands to indicate that she was unarmed, and the officers lowered their guns as well.
Anastasia's name has spread throughout the entire Uptown Police Station thanks to her blocking the police station gate this morning, and Gibson has specifically instructed officers to let her pass when they see her.
"Miss Angel, you've really given me a tough problem," Tobias Gibson said, gesturing to the officers around him to return to their posts.
The chaotic sound of footsteps resumed, and the heavily armed police officers retreated like a receding tide.
"Can't you just stay in your apartment?" Tobias Gibson continued. "Why do you have to go to the theater to see a show?"
Anastasia and Mike also bear undeniable responsibility for the mess that happened tonight, as they recklessly ran around without regard for their own safety.
"What are you saying, Mr. Gibson!" Anastasia feigned surprise. "You said we could go out without worry from now on, you can't go back on your word!"
Snapped!
In front of Anastasia, Gibson slapped himself.
Tobias Gibson knew perfectly well that Anastasia and Mike's real purpose in coming to the theater tonight was to drag the city's police department into the mess.
"Although we suffered a terrible attack, Mr. Gibson didn't need to punish himself like this," Anastasia said. "Those bad guys were too arrogant and didn't take Mr. Lopez and Mr. Gibson seriously at all."
Tobias Gibson knew that Anastasia's words were meant to incite conflict, hoping to garner support for the Uptown Police Department in their fight against the enemy.
"Miss Angel, the police station deeply apologizes for what happened to you and Mr. Montague tonight. The police station will definitely bring the murderer to justice as soon as possible."
Tobias Gibson stated his position directly, adding, "But I have two more questions. The first is, where is Mr. Montagu now?"
"Didn't you already send people to surround the theater?" Anastasia said as she walked forward.
“Miss Angel has quite the… well, quite the audacity,” Gibson said. “Aren’t you afraid someone will kidnap Mr. Montague while you’re away?”
"Of course I was scared! Look at me, that's why I rushed back!" Anastasia continued walking forward. "By the way, let me introduce you. This is Iniz Blatt."
Anastasia pointed, and Iniz Blatt emerged from the alleyway beside her.
Before they could ascertain the true intentions of the Upper East Side Police Department, Anastasia and Blatt split into two groups, one confronting the police department directly and the other observing from the shadows.
Now that it's clear the Upper City Police Department has no hostile intentions, Iniz Blatt, who was secretly observing, no longer needs to hide.
"I've heard so much about you, Mr. Blatt," Gibson said. He knew that Mike Montagu had a mysterious Beyonder by his side, but he didn't know much about Blatt.
"It is my honor to meet Mr. Gibson," said Iniz Blatt, who was very well-mannered and clearly well-educated.
The two exchanged a few polite greetings and then shook hands in a friendly manner.
"Gentlemen, I think we should go pick up little Mike now, shouldn't we?" Anastasia said.
Blatt and Gibson immediately abandoned their earlier mutual admiration and walked side by side with Anastasia toward the neon-lit Vanessa Theatre.
"Mr. Gibson, have you and your officers seen our driver?" Anastasia asked.
"We met Mr. Courtney, which is exactly what puzzles me," Gibson said. "Mr. Courtney didn't encounter any accidents."
Tobias Gibson stopped talking and looked at Anastasia and Blatt respectively.
The coachman Rupert encountered no accidents, and the Vanessa Grand Theatre was surrounded by police officers, so it didn't seem like anything was wrong. Where did the attacker go?
Tonight's attack was clearly a joint operation between the Bureau of Abnormal Investigations and the person behind it. The Bureau of Abnormal Investigations was responsible for luring away and stopping Anastasia, while the attackers were responsible for intercepting Iniz Blatt and forcing Mike Montagu to be alone.
Next, the person behind the scenes will definitely make a move against Mike, who is alone; that's their real purpose in doing all this.
That's why Anastasia hinted to Rupert to drive away before leaving the theater, hoping that Rupert's departure would draw the attackers' attention, even if only a small part of it.
In the end, Rupert failed; his departure did not attract any attention.
But here's the problem: if Rupert failed to lure anyone away, why was Vanessa Theatre completely unaffected?
Anastasia knew perfectly well that Mike and Jolena were safe in the underground space, and the thin black needle she left for Jolena wasn't just for picking locks.
Nothing happened at Vanessa Theatre, and Mike and Jolene were not in danger. Where did the attacker go?
With Anastasia and Blatt both blocked, how could the person behind the scenes possibly remain indifferent to the unprotected Mike Montagu?
Even if the person behind it all suffers from extremely severe paranoia, even if it has reached the point of being incurable cancer, they should at least give it a try, otherwise wouldn't the Rollins team and the dwarf man have died in vain?
"Miss Angel, do you know something?"
Tobias Gibson looked at Anastasia, his intuition telling him that Anastasia must know something.
This intuition didn't come from nowhere; it was Gibson's observation of Anastasia and Blatt, and the judgment was based on that observation.
Both of them looked puzzled, but Iniz Blatt's puzzlement was deeper, while Anastasia, while puzzled, also looked thoughtful.
"Miss Angel, I believe you have seen Mr. Lopez's sincerity. Please speak frankly," Tobias Gibson continued.
"Mr. Gibson," Anastasia began slowly, "has the police investigated LeBon Dupont's whereabouts?"
"Of course we investigated," Gibson said. "Before he died, Dupont went to a restaurant near the police station and saw a blonde, blue-eyed woman in white. Dupont and the woman in white seemed to have had a disagreement, and Dupont even injured one of the restaurant's waiters."
Although Le Pen du Pen is an annoying man, he is, after all, a senior detective, and the Upper City Police Department still has to maintain appearances.
The investigation into the murder was led by Hector Evans, who found that Dupont had dined at a restaurant near the police station before his death and that he had met with a woman in white, but that was all he found.
What Le Bon Dupont and the woman in white talked about, and why they had a falling out, remained a mystery to Hector Evans, who was in charge of the investigation.
As for where Le Bon Dupont went after leaving the restaurant, instead of going to great lengths to investigate, it would be better to ask the real culprit.
"Miss Angel, there are some things we all know, there's no need to hide them."
Tobias Gibson stopped and looked at Anastasia, saying seriously, "For Mr. Lopez, Miss Angel and Mr. Montague are the honored guests."
Compared to their first meeting outside the police station, Gibson's attitude was much more direct, even somewhat urgent, during their second meeting. He seemed even more eager than Anastasia, as if he were the one most eager to uncover the truth behind the scenes.
"Mr. Gibson has already said so much, if I were to keep anything back, it would seem like I'm not being sincere."
Anastasia stopped and looked at the chubby Gibson. She said seriously, "That woman in white came to warn Dupont, to warn them: chaos must not break out in the new city. Unfortunately, Dupont doesn't know the woman in white's true identity."
After saying that, Anastasia continued walking toward the Vanessa Theatre.
This time it was Tobias Gibson's turn to be puzzled. Who was the woman in white that Dupont saw before he died? What was her identity? And who did she represent?
As for Iniz Blatt, he remained in a state of confusion. Everything that had happened tonight had kept Blatt's head under constant stress, and if this continued, his head would start to smoke.
Anastasia was also puzzled. The white-clad woman's identity was a mystery, and her stance was unclear. The only certainty was that she wanted the new city to remain stable and not descend into chaos. The person behind the scenes could attack Montague, but they absolutely could not escalate the situation to the point where everyone knew about it.
At that moment, Iniz Blatt, whose brain was working at full capacity, suddenly spoke.
He said, "Was it that mysterious woman in white who helped us, leaving tonight's attack missing the most crucial element?"
What Iniz Blatt is trying to say is that the person behind the scenes actually arranged for someone to attack Mike, but these people may have been dealt with by the mysterious woman in white before they could even make a move.
If Blatt's speculation is true, it could explain why tonight's attack lacked a crucial element.
“I think Mr. Blatter makes a lot of sense,” Tobias Gibson said. “But what is her motivation for doing this? Is it really just to maintain stability in the new city?”
If the mysterious woman in white's motive is to maintain the stability of the new city, what she should do now is find out who planned the attack and solve the problem at its root, rather than just staying on the surface of the problem.
Anastasia pondered for a long time, but still couldn't figure out the white-clad woman's motives and logic.
The woman in white tacitly allows the person behind the scenes to target Montague, yet she doesn't allow them to escalate the situation. What exactly does she want to do? Is she really just trying to maintain the stability she desires?
Anastasia climbed the steps leading to the Vanessa Theatre, looking at the brightly lit, extravagantly luxurious lobby. Suddenly, she understood the white-clad woman's motives and logic.
The woman in white likely just wanted to protect the Vanessa Theatre, preventing this landmark in the Upper City from becoming a battlefield for the Beyonders.
If the Vanessa Theatre were to be destroyed, the truth would be hard to keep under wraps, and it would certainly cause a huge uproar.
Keeping Mike Montagu in the theater was a lucky accident!
