“Who knows?” Shirakawa shrugged. “It’s not a novel. Emotions are the most unpredictable thing. That’s just how humans are.”
Miyuki licked her lips: "If Hashimoto Arina agrees to Kimura Hama's request, I will NTR Kimura Hama to avenge you."
Shirakawa Natsu was stunned for a moment before she realized that after they got together, NTRing Kimura Hama meant she was dating Hashimoto Arina.
"You bastard, you actually tried to touch my brother's woman!" Shirakawa Natsu was so angry that he picked up the manuscript and threw it at her.
Shirakawa Natsu had originally planned to find an excuse to go on a date with Hashimoto Arina, but this time she took the initiative to suggest it.
"Going to the shrine for the eve of the festival?" Shirakawa Natsu asked, holding a bento box.
The ritual of paying respects to him is all too familiar; it's often seen in comics where childhood sweethearts often get separated at memorial services.
The female protagonist will disappear for a period of time. When the male protagonist finds her, she is walking with his cheerful blond friend.
Then, amidst a sky full of fireworks, the male protagonist confesses his love to the female protagonist, who is walking strangely.
In the end, the two lived happily ever after.
“No.” Shirakawa Natsu immediately wanted to refuse, but quickly came to her senses. It seemed that she was the one who had inserted herself into the childhood friend relationship, so it was fine: “There’s Nai-nee, I’ve never been to the pre-festival, and I don’t have a yukata.”
“It’s okay. Until three years ago, I had been with…” Hashimoto Arina stopped abruptly halfway through her sentence because she used to be with Kimura Hama, and saying it in front of Shirakawa Natsu would easily lead to associations.
She quickly glanced at Shirakawa Natsu out of the corner of her eye, and seeing that there was nothing unusual on his face, she coughed twice and said, "I will arrange it for Natsu."
"Hmm." Shirakawa Natsu nodded, pretending not to have noticed.
"Did you like today's bento?" Hashimoto Arina asked, changing the subject at the opportune moment.
Shirakawa Natsu looked at the bento box, which had changed from being a mushy mess to one where the ingredients were clearly distinguishable. Hashimoto Arina's cooking skills had improved significantly.
But when it came to taste, he hesitated for a moment before saying, "It's cooked."
When the weekend arrived, Hashimoto Arina brought a yukata to the hospital.
He didn't know how to wear a yukata, so Hashimoto Arina carefully helped him change into one.
Hashimoto Arina showed no emotion at his naked body, whether because she was a doctor or because she truly regarded Shirakawa Natsu as a younger brother.
"There are so many people." As soon as Shirakawa Natsu got off the train, she felt herself being pushed forward by the crowd from behind.
He turned his head and found Hashimoto Arina smiling at him. He asked curiously, "Is there something strange about me?"
"No." Hashimoto Arina shook her head: "Summer looks really cool today."
"Because Sister Cai's bathrobe fits me perfectly." Shirakawa Natsu scratched his head and looked around. In terms of looks, he was quite handsome, but he was just rather thin.
At least among the men he's met, only Kimura Hama is more handsome than him.
So he really might be the most handsome guy on this street...
Shirakawa Natsu's expression was strange. Not far ahead, Kimura Hama, dressed in a yukata, stood there with a smile on his face.
Chapter 19 Beautiful
Hama Kimura was wearing a blue and white yukata, and her appearance had changed drastically since her divorce compared to when they last met.
He seems to have started to let loose, dyeing his hair silver-white. This hair color isn't something everyone can pull off, but it doesn't look out of place on him.
What is most striking is his aura, which is more pristine than anyone Shirakawa Natsu has ever met, as if he stepped out of a mythological story.
He stood in front of a goldfish scooping stall, which was already surrounded by female customers. These women were clearly not there to catch fish properly; they were just waving small paper nets around in the water, their eyes all on Hama Kimura, which made the owner grin from ear to ear.
Shirakawa Natsu glanced at Hashimoto Arina out of the corner of her eye, and sure enough, she saw Kimura Hama as well, her body stiffening with tension.
Hama Kimura also looked in this direction, meeting Shirakawa Natsu's gaze with a smile on his face.
After politely declining the invitation from the women around him to ask for his phone number, he walked straight over here.
Hashimoto Arina looked worried, took a half step forward, blocked Shirakawa Natsu's path, and grabbed his sleeve: "Natsu, don't be impulsive."
"Uh." Shirakawa Natsumi looked embarrassed. He didn't intend to act impulsively. Perhaps in Hashimoto Arina's opinion, an eighteen-year-old boy's first reaction upon seeing a love rival is to step forward and throw a punch.
But he wasn't a hot-blooded, impulsive teenager. Hitting someone wouldn't solve the problem, and most importantly, he might not actually be able to beat Kimura Hama.
You can't just lie on the ground and try to extort money from Hashimoto Arina.
But since Hashimoto Arina has said this, wouldn't he seem cowardly if he didn't act like a teenager?
“I have already met Mr. Natsu.” Kimura Hama smiled and bowed slightly to Shirakawa Natsu. “Mr. Natsu is a very interesting person.”
Shirakawa Natsu shrugged; anything she said at that moment would be awkward.
Seeing that he wasn't impulsive, Hashimoto Arina breathed a sigh of relief and moved closer to Shirakawa Natsu: "What a coincidence, running into you here."
Hama Kimura shook his head: "I came here specifically to wait for you because I thought you would come today, just like before."
Hashimoto Arina paused, turned her head away, and nervously gripped Shirakawa Natsu's yukata with her right hand.
“Excuse me, Mr. Natsu,” Kimura Hama said to Shirakawa Natsu, “Could I have a few minutes to talk to You Shirokazu alone?”
Shirakawa Natsu narrowed his eyes slightly. This was a provocation, and he had to be taught a lesson, otherwise he wouldn't be a man.
“Natsu.” Hashimoto Arina suddenly grasped his hand: “I will handle it, please trust me.”
“Sister Yu-na.” Shirakawa Natsu knew that Kimura Hama had come prepared this time, and was clearly planning to lay her cards on the table.
He had long anticipated this day and had been preparing, but he still wasn't 100% confident.
Just as Kimura Hama said, he stood on the side of reason, and his timing was very meticulous.
As Hashimoto Arina mentioned yesterday, until three years ago, she would attend the Eve Festival with Kimura Hama every year. People tend to easily recall past emotions when they are in familiar places.
Kimura Hama tricked him.
“This is something I need to handle, and I can’t involve Natsu.” Hashimoto Arina moved closer to Shirakawa Natsu and looked into his eyes.
Shirakawa Natsu saw persistence in her eyes and knew that her refusal would not change the situation, so she shook her head and forced a smile: "Okay, I'll wait here for Ayana-nee."
Hashimoto Arina nodded to him, then turned and walked towards Kimura Hama.
Shirakawa Natsu looked at her back and felt that the scene was familiar, recalling that she and Hashimoto Arina were taking a walk in the hospital.
A nurse ran over and said that a handsome guy was looking for her at the hospital entrance.
Shirakawa Natsumi sat on a wooden chair and waited, watching Hashimoto Arina walk towards the hospital entrance without turning back.
It's like a circle; at that time, just like right now, we've stumbled and fallen back to the starting point.
Hashimoto Arina and Kimura Hama had already walked more than ten meters away when she seemed to notice something. Suddenly, she turned around, waved to Shirakawa Natsu who was standing there, and mouthed, "Don't wander off, wait for me."
"Mm." Shirakawa Natsu felt a sense of relief for no reason, and nodded without caring whether she could hear him or not.
Once the two figures were obscured by the crowd, he immediately followed them. Staying put was out of the question; he wasn't one of those male victims.
While carefully hiding in the crowd, he took out his phone and dialed Miyuki's number.
After the call was connected, loud music and hysterical shouting from young men and women came from the other end of the line.
"Hey, where are you?"
"A bar." Miyuki's voice was clearly impatient, as if she was very unhappy about being interrupted by his phone call.
"Why are you still going to bars? Shouldn't you be like an NPC, spawning at key event trigger points?" Shirakawa Natsu subconsciously thought she was nearby, since every time he went out alone, Miyuki was either with him or he would run into her.
"I'm dead."
"No, I was just kidding." Shirakawa Natsu saw Hashimoto Arina and Kimura Hama turn into the woods and lost interest in teasing them. "Bring me a stick and a sack. I'm going to teach that pretty boy a lesson."
He hung up the phone after speaking and carefully followed the two into the woods.
Shirakawa Natsu isn't the kind of anime protagonist who can shout, "My happiness is seeing you happy, even if it's not me sleeping with you every day."
If he really was NTR'd, he would definitely retaliate for the things Kimura Hama did to him before.
Hama Kimura walked ahead, while Arina Hashimoto lagged half a step behind.
They stopped under a strangely shaped tree. This tree was different from the surrounding trees; it wasn't straight, but crooked, making it stand out from the crowd.
"I apologize for showing up at the important pre-festival for Arina." Kimura Hama smiled and turned his head: "I felt it was the right thing to do, so I did it."
“It’s okay.” Hashimoto Arina twirled her long hair with one hand, turned her head away, and looked elsewhere. “But the old Hama wasn’t the type to say things like that. She didn’t care about these things, and she couldn’t read the room. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say she was a bit dim-witted.”
"I'm sorry for making you feel bad." Kimura Hama turned his head: "It's probably because of the amnesia. I think I will try my best to return to my original self."
Hashimoto Arina forced a smile but didn't say anything.
“It’s a bit underhanded to choose this location,” Kimura Hama said softly, placing his hand on the crooked tree. “But can we start over?”
Hashimoto Arina was taken aback, but then seemed to have guessed that he would confess here, and a relieved smile appeared on her face.
She looked up at the crooked tree, her gaze deep, as if recalling happy memories, and a smile appeared on her face: "That year we graduated from high school, you won a ring with a target shooting rifle at the festival the night before, and then you proposed to me like a fool under this tree."
"Yes." Kimura Hama nodded, placing a hand on his chest: "We've come full circle, and we're back here again. I think this time, I can give you happiness."
While they were talking, Shirakawa Natsu had already hidden behind a tree nearby. He didn't dare to get too close, and he couldn't hear what the two were saying very clearly.
He could only concentrate with great effort and listen carefully to their conversation, but he still couldn't make it out clearly.
When Kimura Hama confessed his feelings, their voices suddenly became clear.
Upon hearing that this was the place where he had once confessed his love, Shirakawa Natsumi thought to himself that Kimura Hama was despicable. His heart began to race as he awaited Hashimoto Arina's reply.
Hashimoto Arina did not answer immediately, but looked at Kimura Hama and carefully examined him.
Kimura Hama neither dodged nor avoided her; he smiled and looked at her in return.
“You’ve changed so much.” Hashimoto Arina laughed. “I remember that day, you held back your confession for a long time before you finally stammered it out, and your voice was so soft that I couldn’t hear you at all.”
"But I still agreed," Kimura Hama said with a smile.
“Because I know what you want to say.” Hashimoto Arina closed her eyes, as if recalling: “We know each other too well. They say that people who are too familiar with each other will not become lovers. I am very lucky that everything came together naturally.”
Hashimoto Arina looked at Kimura Hama, her eyes gradually softening. She slowly shook her head: "I'm sorry, Hama, I can't agree to that. Let's keep our distance."
"I see." Kimura Hama's expression remained unchanged. "Is it because of Mr. Natsu?"
Upon hearing this name, Hashimoto Arina's face suddenly turned red, and she turned her head away: "There's no way to answer this kind of question. He's still so young."
"Hmph." Kimura Hama showed no embarrassment or anger at being rejected, maintaining his smile: "May I ask why? After all, from a reasonable point of view, he is not the right person to spend your life with."
"Don't ask such questions," Hashimoto Arina said, covering her face. "There's nothing you can do if you fall in love with yourself."
Hama Kimura laughed and said, "Even if he's eight years younger than you."
"Yes."
Even if he is your patient.
"Yes."
Even if he can't be with you for a lifetime.
“Yes.” Hashimoto Arina let go of his hand, looking like she was ready to give up. “But even so, I still like him. Love is inherently irrational. What’s irrational is marriage. So tell me, how can I not fall in love with someone else?”
She also knew that now she treated Shirakawa Natsu more like a younger brother, just as Mikoto had told her.
She would never know if she was an M if she didn't try being an S, but of course she could never say these things.
Shirakawa Natsu heard her words clearly, and his face inexplicably turned red.
My heart felt like it had fallen into honey.
At this moment, the sound of their conversation suddenly drifted away, and the situation returned to being indistinct.
"Strange." Shirakawa Natsu strained her ears again, but the noise in the distance was too loud to hear their conversation clearly.
Having received the answer, there was no point in staying any longer, so he quietly lowered his head and left from behind the tree.
He needed to return to the fish stall beforehand to avoid Hashimoto Arina discovering that he was following the two of them.
Kimura Hama glanced subtly in the direction Shirakawa Natsu had left.
"Hama, I'm sorry." Hashimoto Arina bowed deeply to him. "I will never forget the time we spent together. Those are my memories. Because I met him, I am who I am today. I know my choice was irrational, but I will bear the consequences of my choice."
"No, I won't laugh." Kimura Hama said he wouldn't laugh, but his eyes smiled like crescent moons: "In fact, it's beautiful."
Chapter 20 The Door to a New World
"Hey, you've become so infuriating." After speaking freely, Hashimoto Arina lost her initial restraint, put her hands on her hips, pouted, and said to Kimura Hama, "You were rejected by me, can't you act a little more upset, like yelling about how I'm inferior to him or something?"
"Why suffer?" Kimura Hama smiled. "My only goal from the beginning has been to bring you happiness throughout your life."
"Even if you say something like that," Hashimoto Arina said with a smug expression, "I won't regret it."
