To be honest, the man in the suit made a lot of sense. It perfectly aligned with his survival strategy as a corporate slave in his previous life: maximize personal gain and minimize harm. Bringing Gabe along would increase the danger factor by at least tenfold, while reducing the chance of success to less than ten percent.
This is a bad deal no matter how you look at it.
But damn it, he just can't get over that hurdle in his mind.
The moment he closed his eyes, he could recall the resolute look in Gabe's eyes as he told him to leave alone. It was the look of a true soldier, ready to sacrifice himself for the collective good.
And what about myself? What am I? A transmigrator who takes shortcuts and gets by with his cheat-like abilities?
If he really abandoned Gabe today, even if he later copied a hundred superpowers and became as powerful as a god, would he be able to sleep at night? Wouldn't he feel ashamed when he saw Captain America's shield again?
I finally found a group of comrades-in-arms in this messed-up world who would entrust their backs to each other, and I felt a little bit like a hero. How can I turn back into that selfish coward because of a little difficulty?
Just as Chu Hang was struggling with his inner turmoil, Gabu spoke again beside him. His voice was weak, but exceptionally clear.
"Don't hesitate, let's go. I know what you're thinking. You're stronger and smarter than me. Only you have a chance to find the captain and complete the mission. If I stay here, I'll only hold you back. Listen to me, this is the right choice."
Chu Hang suddenly opened his eyes, turned his head, and stared intently at Gabu.
"Say it again?" His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a suppressed anger.
Gabe was taken aback by his gaze, but still insisted, "I said, you're going to walk alone..."
"Shut up!" Chu Hang interrupted him rudely. "I'm not deaf! I'm asking you, what is the most correct choice? Leaving a wounded soldier like you here in the freezing cold to die is the most correct choice? What are we then? What is the Roaring Commando? A bunch of cold-blooded machines who will sacrifice their teammates to complete the mission?"
He became a little agitated, and his voice unconsciously grew louder.
Gabu fell silent, his gaze complex as he looked at the emotionally charged Chu Hang. He hadn't expected that this seemingly cynical, even sly, Eastern boy would possess such a stubborn, foolish streak deep down.
"But, the mission..."
"The mission is to take down Hydra, that's right!" Chu Hang took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. "But the premise of the mission is that we have to fight like human beings! Not like a bunch of beasts! I'm telling you, Gabe, today, either we both get out of this forest, or we die here together! There is no third option!"
After saying that, he stopped looking at Gabe and took out the radio communicator he had seized from the Hydra captain from his backpack.
Gabu was stunned when he saw the black metal box in Chu Hang's hand: "What are you going to do?"
"Wait to die? Of course not." A familiar, slightly roguish smile returned to Chu Hang's lips. "Since they set us up, we should return the favor, shouldn't we?"
He handed the communicator to Gabe: "You know how to use this thing, right? Can you understand what they're yelling about?"
Gabe took the communicator and nodded: "I know how to use it. I also know some German, so it should be fine for routine military communications."
"That's good." Chu Hang's eyes lit up, like a hungry wolf that had found its way in the dark. "We're like blind and deaf people right now, completely unaware of what's going on at the factory. This fake map tricked us, but it also gave us an opportunity."
"what chance?"
"A chance to eavesdrop on them!" Chu Hang lowered his voice, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "They definitely think we've stepped into a trap, or are walking into one. They'd never guess that we're currently hiding in their weakest point of defense, using their communicator to eavesdrop on their every move!"
Gabe's breathing became rapid instantly.
He understood! He completely understood Chu Hang's intentions!
This is an incredibly bold, even insane, plan! But without a doubt, it's their only way to break the deadlock!
"Quick, open it!" Gabe urged, so excited that he even forgot about the injury on his leg.
Chu Hang carefully turned the knob and turned on the communicator.
A faint crackling sound of electricity echoed in the narrow cave. Chu Hang turned the volume down to the lowest setting, so that he could barely hear it if he leaned close to the edge.
Both of them had their hearts in their throats.
Intermittent German conversations came through the communicator. Gab tilted his ear, his brow furrowed, carefully trying to decipher them.
"...Post number three, all is normal."
"...Patrol Team B has returned and found no trace of them."
"...The supply truck is expected to arrive at the South Gate in half an hour."
Most of it consisted of scattered, worthless daily communications. Although Chu Hang couldn't understand it, he could tell from Gabu's expression that there was nothing important.
He wasn't in a hurry and waited patiently. He knew that under such tight blockade and search, it was impossible to find no useful information.
Sure enough, after about ten minutes, the sound from the communicator suddenly became clearer and more frequent.
A man who sounded like a commander gave the order in a serious tone.
Gabe's expression changed instantly.
"What did he say?" Chu Hang asked immediately.
Gabe gestured for silence and continued listening intently. After the communication ended, he turned to Chu Hang with a grave expression and said, "Bad news. They confirmed that at least two people on the crashed plane successfully parachuted because they found two parachutes with their ropes cut in different areas."
Chu Hang's heart sank. Sure enough, they had been exposed.
"anything else?"
"They said that the regular search teams were too inefficient, and Lord Schmidt (Red Skull) was very unhappy about it. So, they sent out the 'Hounds'."
"Hunting dogs?" Chu Hang frowned. "Are they military dogs? We jumped into the river, so the scent should have been eliminated."
“No.” Gabe shook his head, his face growing even paler. “‘Hound’ doesn’t refer to a real dog. It’s the code name for an elite tracking team within Hydra. It’s said that their captain is a true jungle hunter expert; no trace left behind can escape his notice.”
Chu Hang's heart skipped a beat.
Damn it, just what I feared most has come to pass. I barely escaped the trap, and now I've attracted an even more professional assassin.
This Hydra base is truly a place where hidden talents abound.
However, before he could process this bad news, another piece of information came through the communicator that neither he nor Gabe had expected.
A patrolman reported with a hint of excitement and a desire to claim credit: "Report! We've spotted the target on the western ridge! He's wearing a blue and white uniform and carrying a round shield! He looks exactly like the person in the photo! We're surrounding him!"
Chu Hang's mind went blank.
Captain America has been spotted!
Damn it, how come the plot is completely different from the movie? In the movie, shouldn't Captain America sneak into the factory undetected, rescue everyone, and then dash out with them?
How come he's all alone now, and surrounded by Hydra?
Chu Hang's first thought was, could it be that his appearance triggered a butterfly effect and changed the plot?
"Don't fire! Lord Schmidt needs to be alive!" The commander immediately issued a new order over the communicator, "All units move towards the western ridge! Repeat, all units, move towards the western ridge immediately! Surround him and kill him!"
In an instant, a cacophony of responses erupted from the communication channel.
Chu Hang could imagine that at this moment, all the Hydra soldiers around the factory were surging towards the western ridge from all directions, like sharks smelling blood.
That place is about to become a net that can trap you from all sides.
Captain America is the fish in the net.
Chu Hang's heart pounded.
His replication ability has a cooldown period of more than two days. Even if you rush over now, you won't be of much help, and you might even get yourself caught in the crossfire.
But if I don't go...
That's Captain America! He's the ultimate target of this mission! And the near-perfect hero he's always admired!
Are we just going to stand by and watch him get captured by Hydra and then dissected for research?
Just as Chu Hang's mind was in complete chaos, Gabu, who was next to him, suddenly grabbed his arm tightly.
"Chu! Listen!"
Chu Hang was taken aback and focused his attention on the communicator again.
Amidst the cacophony of communications about reinforcements rushing to the scene, a faint yet chilling voice broke through the silence, sending shivers down the spines of both Chu Hang and Gabu.
It was a calm, emotionless male voice, belonging to the so-called "hound" captain.
"Command center, this is Hound. I have reached the target drop zone. There are drag marks on the ground, two people, one of whom is injured. They did not head towards the trap zone, but instead... turned towards the downstream riverbank."
"They are clever; they want to use the river water to erase the traces."
"However, they made a mistake."
"The arnica on the snow didn't just grow legs and run into the cave."
The voice paused, then spoke slowly in a cold tone, as if stating a fact.
"I can smell them."
"They are nearby."
Chapter 14 Making a feint to the east and attacking in the west
A cold, emotionless voice came through the communicator.
"I can smell them."
"They are nearby."
These two sentences are very calm, as if they are stating facts.
There was no roar, no howl, yet it was more terrifying than any threat.
This idea simultaneously popped into the minds of Chu Hang and Gabu.
Gabe's face turned deathly pale instantly, and he instinctively clutched his injured thigh tightly.
The wounds were bandaged, but the faint smell of blood had probably already given away their location.
This cave wasn't a refuge; it was a sarcophagus. The darkness at the entrance resembled a gaping maw ready to devour them at any moment.
Chu Hang's back was covered in cold sweat. He could picture the scene outside the cave: a Hydra elite crouching in the snow like a hound, its nose twitching in the air, its eyes already locked on the rock face.
Run? Where to run?
Gabe's legs were a burden. The footprints and bloodstains in the snow were the most obvious markers. He wouldn't be able to run fifty meters before that freak caught up with him and killed him like a mouse being toyed with.
Not run? Or stay here and wait to die?
Waiting for someone to find the hole, then laughingly throwing in a grenade? Hydra's elites are absolutely capable of doing something like that.
What should I do? What the hell should I do?
Chu Hang's mind raced, but every thought pointed to a dead end.
Just then, the communicator rang again. It was the commander's voice, urging: "Hound, report your exact coordinates! Do you need fire support?"
Chu Hang and Gabu were on tenterhooks.
